The 1st Southeast Asia Pro Bono Conference will take place on 28 and 29 September 2012 in Vientiane, Laos. Organised by Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia Community Legal Education Initiative (BABSEA CLE), in cooperation with the National University of Laos Faculty of Law and Political Science, the conference will strengthen the ability of the legal profession to lead and actively participate in pro bono initiatives in the Southeast Asia region.
The development of pro bono programmes and a socially aware legal profession is essential to greater access to justice and a stronger rule of law. This Conference offers a space for local and international law firms, social justice organizations, law schools, academics, governmental officials and policy makers to network, create partnerships and explore meaningful and effective pro bono opportunities.
The two day Conference will educate students, professors, lawyers, the judiciary, government officials and policy makers, lawyers’ associations and the non-profit sector on the meaning and concept of pro bono. Participants will learn about pro bono in Southeast Asia and how it can transform the lives of millions of people and work towards creating fairer, more transparent legal systems in the region.
The Conference will explore the methods, means and strategies for developing and implementing pro bono initiatives and partnerships. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from the experiences of others. The interactive sessions will foster collaborative ties between the participants to create and strengthen pro bono initiatives locally, regionally and internationally.
The Conference will look at the various ways leaders and managers can inspire their teams or students to undertake pro bono work, ensuring that participants are able to create sustainable pro bono programmes when returning to work or study.
