Asia Regional CLE Mock Trial Event

Dec 11-14, 2019 | Chiang Mai, TH TrialsWorkshops

The Asia Regional CLE Mock Trial Event held on 11-14 December 2019 is one of the events occurred during the Access to Justice Week (11-15 December 2019). The event will be held at Uniserv in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The event will begin with the Asia Regional CLE Mock Trial Training on the 11 -12th of December. The training will include several sessions with a strong focus on the AsiaRegional CLE Mock Trial event’s rules and procedures. Moreover, the different stages of the trial (case planning and case theory, witness preparation and testifying witness examination techniques) were explained. The importance of evidence, impartiality and transparency will also be covered. The role of judges was analysed. Other sessions also focused on improving participants’ presenting skills (including opening and closing statements). The training aims to show the students how the CLE Mock Trial is organized, to review its general principles and to deepen their knowledge, skills and value in order to achieve a successful and fair trial. The students will learn how to apply and use the facts to the law, how to present a case and the characteristics of an ethical advocate. The training also aims to help students to develop their legal, analytical and advocacy skills, increasing familiarity with the court process and enhancing their appreciation and understanding of legal ethics.

The CLE Mock Trial is a practical learning experience in which students simulate a local court trial of a minor civil dispute or criminal offence. CLE Mock Trial allows students to develop legal, analytical and advocacy skills, thereby increasing familiarity with court process and enhancing participants’ appreciation and understanding of legal ethics. The focus of the Regional CLE Mock Trial Event is the development of these clinical legal education (CLE) outcomes. As such, the structure used for this Regional CLE Mock Trial Event will not strictly adhere to the local procedure but has been modeled to facilitate the development of CLE outcomes in a practical setting.

The event will involve Bachelor of Law student participants from the region including Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is being organized as a means to further strengthen each of these university law department’s CLE programmes and their approaches to teaching.

This Regional CLE Mock Trial Event is part of a regional clinical legal education, Rule of Law/ Access to Justice, programme that BABSEACLE, Herbert Smith Freehills, DLA Piper/New Perimeter and Lanna Lawyers are assisting in implementing.
