
On May 4th through 8th, 2011 CLE Foundation Thailand, BABSEA CLE facilitate a 5 day CLE training at University Phayao. During the 5 days of organizing, facilitating, and conducting interactive activities at the CLE workshop CLE partners from Thailand, Lao PDR and Viet Nam were provided focused training, specifically:
· Law professors/lecturers and law students received training on how to plan, strengthen, teach, monitor and evaluate their CLE programs in Thailand. During the workshop the participants were acquainted with new sources of information, provided a forum for them to share their experiences and assisted them in establishing local partner support and identifying suitable community settings.
· Law professors/lecturers and law students received training on how to effectively conduct interactive community legal teachings and how to provide quality client-centered legal advice and consultation services.
· Representatives from the legal fraternity throughout Thailand and Southeast Asia received training on how to improve their effectiveness when providing Legal Aid, Community Legal Education, pro bono legal services and other related services.
· Law students and Law professors/lecturers visited a local farming community and carried out an introductory legal needs assessment with villagers and the community leaders.
· Improving the participants and the CLE program’s ability to plan, implement, monitor, evaluate and strengthen their CLE programs.
In addition to CLE methodology and program development, the workshop strongly focused on assisting in the development of socially aware, ethical lawyers and non-lawyers to actively participate; advocate and lead, both locally and internationally, in the global social justice movement. Legal issues that were discussed during the 5 days included stateless legal issues, land and water issues and criminal procedures and rights when arrested.
