The following is a list of some costs each intern will incur:

Program Cost: USD $3,000*
Bridges Across Borders Southeast Asia Community Legal Education Initiative is a grassroots organization where many of the staff and directors receive a very small amount of income for their work and many others are volunteers. Nevertheless, in order to function, our organization does incur a low level of administration expense. This cost helps us cover these overheads to administer the externship while being able to continue our work in the region.
The Program Cost includes:
- Accommodation: shared accommodation (2-3 persons per room with fan)
- Administration, legal supervision & coordination costs
- Support for our Community Legal Education partner programs and projects
The Program Cost does not include:
- Airfare/s
- Visas, travel, health or theft insurance or other travel documents
- Optional activities such as cooking, exercise and language classes
- Food and personal incidentals
- Costs incurred for or during activities to complete the “Volunteer Log”
- Daily transit to and from work
- Transportation between regional partners for Options C,V,M,L,I
- Air Condition
*Many past participants have received partila fellowships, grants and student loans from their educational and other institutions to assist with these program costs. This has also included academic credit. |
Additional Costs other than Program Cost

| There will be other costs that are not included in the program cost. Below are some estimates of some of these living/daily expenses: |
| Food |
FoodFood is relatively cheap and very delicious in Southeast Asia. An estimated food budget per month ranges from $150 – $350 USD, depending on how much one cooks or goes out to eat. |
| Travel Visas |
Visa
Depending on the extern’s program option, Visas for the 12-week Legal Externship Program will total approximately $50 – $200 USD, including incidental costs in obtaining and renewing them. More information will be available upon acceptance or check with the Thai, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, and/or Indonesia Consulate in your home country.

| Transport & Incidentals |
Travel/Incidentals
You will be responsible for paying for any local overland travel (motorbike, tuk tuk, taxi, bus, tours, etc.), restaurant meals or shopping that you might wish to enjoy during your stay. Itinerary trips to other towns or provinces are usually by bus, the price will usually vary between USD $4 – $20 depending on destination. An approximate cost might average USD $100, which depends on the individual person’s desire for travel and comfort.

| Workshops |
Workshop participation outside the city in which the intern is based. Inters wishing to attend CLE workshops in cities and countries outside of the city they are based will be responsible to pay their own way for all costs if they are interested in voluntarily attending.

| Cultural & Traditional Activities |
Cultural and Traditional Activities Participation Interns wishing to join with activities that focus on cultural and traditional activities will be responsible to pay their own way; these expenditures are not included in the “Program Cost”.
